Features

Performance Fabric
Soft polyester-elastane performance fabric with 4-way stretch, quick-drying properties, and moisture management for active training.

Fabric composition may vary depending on where your order is produced:

  • 78% polyester, 22% elastane — US/Mexico
  • 84% polyester, 16% elastane — Latvia

Raglan Construction
Raglan sleeves extend to the collar, creating diagonal seams that support natural shoulder movement.

Extended Coverage
The longer body and sleeves provide added coverage during grappling and under-gi wear.

Smooth Interior
Flat seams and coverstitch construction help keep the interior smooth against the skin.

All-Over Sublimation
The artwork is dyed into the fabric rather than applied as a surface layer, helping reduce the cracking and peeling associated with surface-applied graphics.

Because the design is sublimated onto white fabric, dark areas may appear slightly lighter when stretched, and small amounts of the white base fabric may be visible at seams or folds. This is a normal characteristic of the all-over sublimation process.

About the TOO MUCH KANJI Rash Guard

The Design
Inspired by the Japanese ghost story Hoichi the Earless, the all-over print repeats six Japanese four-character expressions across the body and sleeves as symbols of protection, strategy, and care on the mats.

The SPARS Seal
The red seal on the left upper sleeve represents SPARS in kanji chosen for their sound. Inspired by Japanese artists’ seals, it is the signature mark of the TOO MUCH KANJI collection.

White × Black
The rash guard comes in Iron Black with white kanji and a red SPARS seal.

Training Use
This rash guard is designed for regular grappling, BJJ, and MMA training. Competition eligibility depends on the event, division, and uniform rules. Check your event's requirements before competing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this rash guard fit, and what size should I order?
This women's rash guard has a fitted athletic cut that is tailored through the chest and waist, and it runs small. If your measurements fall between sizes, or if you prefer a slightly less close-fitting feel, we recommend sizing up. Use the Body Measurements Size Guide to choose your size.
Is this rash guard designed for grappling and BJJ training?
Yes. It is made for regular grappling, no-gi training, drilling, rolling, open mat, and BJJ practice. The fitted cut and 4-way stretch fabric move with the body during training. It also works well for MMA and other combat sports training that includes grappling.
Can I wear it under my gi?
Yes. The fitted cut, smooth fabric, and flat-seam construction make it suitable for layering under a BJJ gi. The longer body and sleeves provide added coverage during training.
Can I wear this rash guard in competition?
This rash guard is designed for regular training and is not specifically designed to meet IBJJF no-gi uniform requirements. Competition requirements vary by organization and division and may change over time. If you plan to wear it in competition, check your event's current uniform rules before purchasing.
What do the kanji on the rash guard mean?
The print repeats six Japanese four-character expressions: 桃弧棘矢, 金城鉄壁, 輸攻墨守, 曲突徙薪, 慎始敬終, and 家内安全. In this design, they represent themes of protection, strategy, and care on the mats. Each one is explained in 6 Wards of Protection below.
Why is it called TOO MUCH KANJI?
The name is a nod to the dense all-over print. The idea comes from Hoichi the Earless, a Japanese ghost story in which words written across the body protect a musician from spirits.
How is the design printed?
The rash guard uses all-over sublimation, which dyes the artwork into the fabric rather than applying it to the surface.
Can I return or exchange the rash guard if I order the wrong size?
This product is made to order. We generally do not accept returns or exchanges for incorrect sizing, change of mind, or other ordering errors, except where required by applicable law. Please review the Body Measurements Size Guide carefully before ordering.

If your item arrives damaged, defective, misprinted, or incorrect, contact us within 30 days of receiving it. We'll review the issue and, where appropriate, offer a replacement or refund. This does not affect your statutory rights. Please see our Return & Refund Policy for full details.

DESIGN CONCEPT

"TOO MUCH KANJI?"
YEAH, WE KNOW.

More kanji than anyone asked for. Every phrase chosen for a reason.

Welcome to the SPARS TOO MUCH KANJI collection.

THE INSPIRATION

THE LEGEND BEHIND THE INK

In the Japanese ghost story Hoichi the Earless, a priest and his assistant write Buddhist scripture across a blind musician’s body to hide him from spirits. His ears are left unmarked, and a spirit takes them.

That image inspired TOO MUCH KANJI: words worn as a symbol of protection. We bring that idea to the mats through six Japanese four-character expressions—a wearable reminder to stay aware and take care of yourself and your training partners.

Illustration inspired by Hoichi the Earless. The lettering is not an exact transcription of the sutra.

6 WARDS OF PROTECTION

Six four-character expressions come together in this design as symbols of protection, strategy, and care on the mats.

Toko Kyokushi

WARD OFF MISFORTUNE

A peachwood bow and arrows made from thorny branches, traditionally used to ward off evil and misfortune.

A symbol of protection to carry onto the mats.

Kinjo Teppeki

IMPREGNABLE DEFENSE

A metaphor for a defense with no opening.

Build structure. Protect your position. Give nothing away.

Shuko Bokushu

STRATEGY IN ATTACK AND DEFENSE

From an ancient tale of two strategists testing attack and defense.

Attack with purpose. Defend with composure.

Kyokutotsu Shishin

PREVENT TROUBLE BEFORE IT STARTS

From a warning to bend a chimney and move firewood to prevent a fire.

Move with intention. Tap early so you can train again tomorrow.

Shinshi Keishu

CARE FROM START TO FINISH

Remaining careful and diligent from beginning to end.

Stay mindful and respect your partner from your first round to your last.

Kanai Anzen

FAMILY SAFETY AND WELL-BEING

A wish for everyone in the family to stay safe and healthy.

Train hard. Take care of your partners. Go home healthy.
