THE INSPIRATION
In the Japanese ghost story Hoichi the Earless, a priest and his assistant write Buddhist scripture across a blind musician’s body to hide him from spirits. His ears are left unmarked, and a spirit takes them.
That image inspired TOO MUCH KANJI: words worn as a symbol of protection. We bring that idea to the mats through six Japanese four-character expressions—a wearable reminder to stay aware and take care of yourself and your training partners.
Illustration inspired by Hoichi the Earless. The lettering is not an exact transcription of the sutra.
Six four-character expressions come together in this design as symbols of protection, strategy, and care on the mats.
