About the TOO MUCH KANJI Rash Guard
The Design
Inspired by the Japanese ghost story Hoichi the Earless, the all-over print repeats six Japanese four-character expressions from the waistband down both legs as symbols of protection, strategy, and care on the mats.
The SPARS Seal
The red seal on the lower left leg represents SPARS in kanji chosen for their sound. Inspired by Japanese artists’ seals, it is the signature mark of the TOO MUCH KANJI collection.
Iron Black × White
The leggings come in Iron Black with white kanji and a red SPARS seal.
Training Use
These leggings are designed for regular grappling, BJJ, and MMA training. Competition eligibility depends on the event, division, and uniform rules. Check your event’s requirements before competing.

How do these leggings fit, and what size should I order?
These women’s plus size BJJ leggings have a snug, fitted cut with a high-rise waistband. If your measurements fall between sizes, we recommend sizing down. If your waist and hip measurements point to different sizes, choose based on your hips. Use the Body Measurements Size Guide to choose your size.
What sizes are available?
These plus size leggings are available in sizes 2XL to 6XL. For sizes XS to XL, see the TOO MUCH KANJI BJJ Leggings.
Are these leggings designed for grappling and BJJ training?
Yes. They are made for regular grappling, no-gi training, drilling, rolling, open mat, and BJJ practice. The 4-way stretch fabric moves with the body during training, and the high-rise waistband helps keep them in place. They also work well for MMA and other combat sports training that includes grappling.
Can I wear them under shorts or gi pants?
Yes. The fitted cut and smooth stretch fabric make them suitable for layering under grappling shorts or BJJ gi pants.
How long are the leggings?
They are full length and end just above the ankle. Inseam measurements for each size are listed in the Garment Measurements.
Can I wear these leggings in competition?
These leggings are designed for regular training and are not specifically designed to meet IBJJF no-gi uniform requirements. Competition requirements vary by organization and division and may change over time, including rules on whether shorts must be worn over spats or leggings. If you plan to wear them in competition, check your event’s current uniform rules before purchasing.
What do the kanji on the leggings mean?
The print repeats six Japanese four-character expressions: 桃弧棘矢, 金城鉄壁, 輸攻墨守, 曲突徙薪, 慎始敬終, and 家内安全. In this design, they represent themes of protection, strategy, and care on the mats. Each one is explained in 6 Wards of Protection below.
Why is it called TOO MUCH KANJI?
The name is a nod to the dense all-over print. The idea comes from Hoichi the Earless, a Japanese ghost story in which words written across the body protect a musician from spirits.
How is the design printed?
The leggings use all-over sublimation, which dyes the artwork into the fabric rather than applying it to the surface.

THE INSPIRATION
THE LEGEND BEHIND THE INK
In the Japanese ghost story Hoichi the Earless, a priest and his assistant write Buddhist scripture across a blind musician’s body to hide him from spirits. His ears are left unmarked, and a spirit takes them.
That image inspired TOO MUCH KANJI: words worn as a symbol of protection. We bring that idea to the mats through six Japanese four-character expressions—a wearable reminder to stay aware and take care of yourself and your training partners.
